 | Ganaraska Grain was founded by Ben and Jacquie Currelly in 1980. They started out with one bin and a dryer on their home farm in Hope Township (now the municipality of Port Hope). Today they serve about 140 farmers from Newcastle to Peterborough to Grafton -a radius of about 30 miles- handling, cleaning, storing, drying and trucking about 30,000 mt (1.2 million bushels) of grain per year. Ganaraska Grain is licensed for all commodity groups: corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, barley and more. It employs ten people full time and offers the latest technological advances in conjunction with the services of a licensed commercial elevator. With computer generated receipts, farmers are kept appraised of their current position at time of delivery. "Our job is to convert grain to cash as quickly as possible," explains Mr. Currelly. Information is the key to helping farmers decide whether to forward market their crops, sell at harvest, or store and wait for market appreciation. Mr. Currelly also speaks at farm meetings, and the company produces a newsletter called "Grain Grower." In keeping with its mission statement, Ganaraska endeavors "to continue growth though the diversification of value added services, production excellence, and risk management, using a dynamic company structure to meet the challenges of the 21st century." |
